Dear Asset Building Community,
We are pleased to inform you that SB 190 (Mitchell) has passed through both Assembly and Senate with overwhelming bipartisan support and has made it to the Governor’s desk for a signature. We are calling on you to urge Governor Brown to sign SB 190 into law.
SB 190 would end juvenile administrative fees placed on families’ whose children enter the juvenile justice system. These fees cause a significant financial burden on families and undermine the purpose of the juvenile justice system. Currently, it is each county’s discretion on what kinds of fees are charged and how much they will cost. In one case, a mother in Contra Costa County was billed for more than $10,000 for her son’s detention, even after charges against her son were dropped. This is far from a just system.
We ask for you to send a letter of support addressed to Governor Brown signed by you or your organization.
